The incredible change in the way we communicate has made some pretty cool stuff possible in recent years. Debbie took a picture from a cardboard box, laid it on the floor, and used her phone to post a duplicate of it in a place where hundreds of people could see it. Many of those people have, in turn, commented on the picture and reflected on the time at which it was taken.

To me, though, the photo represents a parable of sorts. Yes, by the time I saw that picture online it was blurry. But as I’ve said, I knew the context of the photo so I was able to enjoy the memories it produced. As a Christian I find that many images in scripture may appear blurry to me as well. The flow of time and the differences in language and culture are just a few of the factors that take the crispness off of accounts from the Old and New Testaments. To read scripture, then, is more like peering into a shimmering pool than an HDTV screen.

To be a Christian, though, is also to know something about those events in history and of the message they convey about God and God’s love for humanity. To read the Bible is to be encountered by a God of majesty and grace who nonetheless holds the divine ear close to the lips of all who pray. To study scripture is to gain the insight and confidence necessary to apply its meaning to contemporary life. To immerse oneself in scripture is to allow God’s word to permeate life and to help make sense of all we encounter.

Yes, I won a flag football championship in seminary (two actually—not to brag), and yes there are photos that help me remember those days. But in scripture I come to know the truly mighty acts of one who loves us enough to stand with us in life and in death, to watch over us in our coming and going, to work in and though creation to achieve a higher purpose for us and for the world itself. And that is an image worth reflecting on.

KINGWOOD, TX – Virginia King Robertson, born Jan. 18, 1918, in Texarkana, Texas, passed away peacefully Monday, March 19, 2012, in Kingwood, Texas at the age of 94. She was a longtime resident of Shreveport and member of Broadmoor Presbyterian Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, Henry P. Robertson; parents Melvin Moore King Sr. and Lillian Marie Hobbs King; and brother M.M. King Jr.

She is survived by her children, Linda Robertson Dumesnil (Henry) of Kingwood and Mike Robertson (Dianne) of Castor, La.; grandchildren, Timothy Dumesnil (Kayla) of Abbeville, La. and Teryn Stewart (Kyle) of Kingwood; and great grandchildren, Ashlynn, Ali, and Jacob.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2012, at Rose-Neath Marshall Street Chapel. Officiating was the Rev. Jim Freeman of Broadmoor Presbyterian Church. Visitation was at 9:30 a.m. prior to the service Saturday at the funeral home. A graveside service followed at 3:30 p.m. at Hillcrest Cemetery, Texarkana, Texas, with the Rev. Diane Brown, retired pastor of Broadmoor Presbyterian, officiating.

Our goal is to encourage the members of the congregation to think about what they want to see happen over the next one to ten years in the way of growth and Christian education.
